Parents asked to speak out about Wellesley High orchestra changes

The Wellesley Public School system is “making programmatic changes which are resulting in the reassignment of K-12 music educators,” and some parents who have issues with the moves are expected to make their voices heard at the Citizens Speak segment of  Tuesday night’s School Committee meeting at Town Hall, which kicks off at 7pm.

The School Committee itself does “not discuss or become involved in personnel decisions,” according to School Committee chair Diane Campbell. (Although personnel updates are sometimes announced at the meeting by the superintendent and such announcements are on the agenda for Tuesday).

A change involving WHS orchestra director Mary Alice McCann spurred one parent to email us and others encouraging them to show up at the SC meeting tonight and “be prepared to talk about why Ms. McCann is vital to our orchestra program so that we can reverse this decision” or to at least write a letter to Superintendent David Lussier.

McCann, who joined the WHS faculty in 2007, last year received an honor as Orchestra Director of the Year by the Massachusetts Chapter of the American String Teachers Association.
